On January 19, East Bay EDA kicked off the year by hosting a private tour for members and partners at Penumbra, headquartered on Bay Farm Island in the City of Alameda. Penumbra is a global healthcare company that designs, develops, and manufactures devices for interventional therapies to treat vascular conditions such as stroke and aneurysm. Today, its products can be found in 100+ markets worldwide.
The company was founded in 2004 and has grown significantly over the past twenty years, employing nearly 4,000 employees. According to Penumbra CEO, Adam Elsesser, who greeted our tour group in the lobby of its newest building, the company has made efforts to keep jobs local, and is proud to have over 2,000 of its employees located onsite in Alameda, making it one of the largest 25 employers in the East Bay. The company also provides technical on the job skills training to all employees. The tour included an inside look a Penumbra’s state of the art biomedical manufacturing and research facilities.
Penumbra was recognized by East Bay EDA as an awardee in the Life Sciences category for the 2013 East Bay Innovation Awards. Since then, the company has been a forerunner for many honorees from Alameda and is part of the region’s rapidly growing, innovative cluster of biomedical manufacturing companies identified by Resilient East Bay.
This exclusive tour was made possible in partnership with the City of Alameda and the Alameda Chamber & Economic Alliance.
