East Bay EDA and Kos Read Group, Inc. (KRG) were pleased to recently host more than 100 East Bay community leaders who gathered on a sunny Sunday afternoon on the turf Cal State East Bay’s Pioneer Stadium to watch a historic match between the Oakland Roots SC and the Sacramento Republic. This exciting, sold-out match between two Northern California powerhouse teams had lots of action and excitement, and was the United Soccer League’s (USL) second-ever nationally televised game in league history. For many attendees, it was their first time experiencing an Oakland Roots game and learning more about the game of soccer and the momentum that this sport has been garnering in the East Bay as well as nationally.
Following an electric halftime show by Iamsu, our VIP guests were greeted by Oakland Roots SC President Lindsay Barenz, who explained to the assembled guests that their soccer club is about more than just sports, they are also about supporting and uplifting the fabric of Oakland and the broader East Bay region. “Oakland Roots & Soul are a purpose-driven organization. We started this club because we believe in the power of sport to bring people together and have been intentional from the start about making sure that we stay true to our mission with our business decisions, our partnerships, and in the work that we do to support the community”, said Barenz.
One of the highlights of the afternoon took place right before the second half of the game, when East Bay EDA Second Vice Chair Ken Maxey, Director of Government Affairs with Comcast joined Lindsay to present an official Oakland Roots jersey to Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson, who has been the Chair of East Bay EDA for more than two decades. Although Supervisor Carson was unable to attend the game, he was presented with his jersey the following week at an East Bay EDA Board of Directors meeting.
East Bay EDA is excited about the authenticity and excitement that the Oakland Roots & Soul Soccer Club are bringing to professional sports in the East Bay. If you haven’t been out to a game yet, it’s not too late – we encourage you to check the schedule and get out to a game to experience it for yourself. East Bay EDA looks forward to potentially repeating this event in 2025!
