Fittingly located at the former control tower of the Alameda Naval Air Station, Rain was the first stop on the tour. Daniel Wholey, the company’s Head of Strategy & Partnerships, provided an overview of the company’s history and evolution to tourgoers, explaining how Rain’s technology is built to help fire agencies more rapidly suppress wildfires during the earliest stages of ignition. By adapting existing military and civil autonomous aircraft with the intelligence to perceive, understand, and suppress wildfires, Rain technology enables fire agencies to improve the operational safety of human-piloted missions and scale response capacity with prepositioned uncrewed aircraft. Daniel shared information about recent pilot testing activities and other partnerships that Rain has undertaken with fire agencies and various other entities with land management responsibilities, such as park districts. He went on to highlight the many improvements that Rain has made on both the hardware and software side of its operations since its founding in 2019, finishing his overview with a few video demonstrations showing how the company has developed different technologies and tools to help arrest and mitigate the spread of wildfires, which the company notes are estimated to cost the United States at least $400B annually.
Following the tour of Rain, attendees went just a short way down the street to visit Pyka, a former Y Combinator company that manufactures dual-use, heavy-lift autonomous aircraft. Since completing a successful $3M fundraising round in early 2018, Pyka has reached several important investment and product development milestones, as outlined on its website, including the development of 2nd- and 3rd-generation autonomous aircraft that have been delivered to and deployed by customers in South America for crop spraying. The company’s planes began flying crop-spraying missions in Costa Rica in late 2022, paving the way for Pyka to receive FAA authorization to operate spraying flights in the United States a year later. Concurrently, the company continued to deepen and expand its work in this space while also turning its attention to new market opportunities, specifically autonomous cargo deliveries. Walking around the massive hangar that houses Pyka’s operations, tour attendees were able to see their planes and technology firsthand while also learning more about how the company has been partnering with the College of Alameda to find many of their newer hires.
As the group concluded its tour of these two phenomenal Alameda Point companies, people left energized and optimistic about the current and future state of Bay Area manufacturing. Although the challenges facing our region’s manufacturers and workers are well known and not easy to solve, these two early-stage companies offered shining examples of the possibilities and potential of our region to continue to lead the world in innovative industries and technologies.
